Brought and Taken in the Wind

Hey Kids,

The wind blows from the south tonight.

This usually means a storm approaches but the forecast says otherwise. Instead this wind brings with it warm temperatures for the weekend, sunny skies, and blue skies.

The windows have all been open and the pulses of wind that cause the drapes to breathe in and out like the sides of a dragon in a deep sleep, bring with them the dust from parts unknown.

What carries on the wind? Perhaps the dust of a gravel pit, or the dried dirt of a construction site. Or perhaps the mountain that once stood great after being thrust into the sky from an ancient force from the core the earth, now weathered and softened by the winters of millennia. Within this dust carries the shores of an ancient ocean, of the remains of its inhabitants. A volcano’s blast might also be mixed with the dirt caught on the grid of the screen door.691e80fd1f9f0d637cc02177b6831dba

Each gust of wind carries with it, the geologic memories of the earth.

The wind carries with it this night, other memories; memories of times not so ancient. Memories of smiles and laughter, of little hands, and kisses good night.

The mountain is not the only thing tonight being ground by the sands of time blowing on the wind.

So Long as It Has Sprinkles

Hey Kids,

I consider myself a writer. I’m not killing it, but I enjoy writing and most importantly, I write.

I enjoy well written articles, books, and blogs. I love seeing people craft words in a way that make an idea become alive; sentences that wind their way around an idea that it takes the whole of it to get to its punchline conclusion.

From Hemingway’s 6-word short story to Rowling’s impossibly long single sentence descriptions- it’s all good.

I’m not the best raw speller of words, however. Some people just have the knack of guessing correctly. I do not. I’ll slaughter the construction of a word as good as anyone. Now with built in spell check, it isn’t as evident, but I struggle on a whiteboard.

And maybe it’s because of this known weakness within, but I really don’t get all excited when something is misspelled. I don’t get ape crazy with a misplaced your or you’re. Or getting there, their, or they’re mixed up. I don’t care if one spells through as thru, or night as nite, or doughnut as donut.

In fact, I like donuts. Day or nite.

For Those who Dare

Hey Kids,

In French it’s: “La vengeance est un plat qui se mange froid.”

Or in English, or Klingon, it’s: “Vengeance is a dish best served cold.”Klingon_Symbol

Vengeance is payment sought for the misactions of others. Or at least actions that don’t agree with oneself.

It’s not the “drinking from the skulls of your enemies” type of vengeance that’s the most common (unless you’re Klingon), nor or the misactions in the realm of burning down the village of your ancestors. Instead I find other drivers who choose not to drive as I do, change lanes when I would, or, how dare they, go a different speed than I deem best for them to travel.

I wish upon such transgressors the issuance of a ticket, the curse of being trapped in traffic behind an 18 wheeler, or the dawning of the realization of their presence in the such a superior driver. Or at least the admittance of their inferior skills- possibly the best punishment of them all.

I find I get angry a lot lately. Things don’t go my way and I wish retribution.

Make me wait; I will curse you.

Buy the last of that which I wanted’ I will devalue that which you have.

Be happier than me; I will pray for your demise.

Don’t hold the door open for me; I will not hold it open for the person behind me.

Vengeance is a plate best served cold because it’s a dish you shouldn’t want to partake.

I need to relax and live and let live.

And as fun as drinking the blood of my enemies might sound, it’s the better person who settles for a nice iced tea, to let the others do as they would do, to maybe even slow down and let them through.

Aimer est plus fort que d’être aimé. To love is better than being loved.

Unless, of course, you’re a Klingon.

The Week Before the Vacay

Hey Kids,

The week before vacation is an amazing thing.

There are lists of things to do, and because I won’t be there next week, I get them done. It’s like I’m inspired.Lake-Powell

Because I am. The last thing I want to do is to have to try to do something over the phone while I’m trying to recreate.

The second last thing I want to do is to have to work twice as hard when I get back. Or have the boss man on my tail because something didn’t get done.

So double the effort now. I can because there’s an end in sight. It’s a push to a finish line.

I wonder though, why don’t I work like this all the time and just be ahead?

If I got a week’s vacation every other week, maybe I would.

To Thyself Be True

Hey Kids,

Loyalty. What exactly is that?

Devoted. Obedient. Trustworthy. Stalwart. Supportive. Safe.

People are loyal to family and friends; all others are secondary. Blood is thicker than water, it is said.

People are loyal to country. Death before surrender, death to all against.

People are loyal to brands. Buy no other, tell others by word of mouth, or by t-shirt.

People are loyal to routine. Practice makes perfect.

Loyalty is usually earned and maintained. The family never betrays, a country grants freedom, brands never disappoint, routine produce results.

It’s easy to be loyal.hamlet

Except to oneself.

Earn your own loyalty and be everything you respect in others.

My Own Day

Hey Kids,

There’s something to waiting for the sun to rise.

I’ve been up for a little while, getting some writing done, sitting on the bench on the flying bridge under the covered slip, watching the glow of today grow along the western horizon.

Starting at pitch black after the setting of the moon this morning, all details now can be seen but no sun yet.

I feel the day is mine. I own it. I was here when it began to arrive and I’ve yet to see another human.

The winds that blew all night, rocking the boats in the slips and anchorage has now calmed and only the sound of the electrical buzz from the dock transformers and a single raven’s occasional call can be heard.

Every time I look up from my screen the sky is a little brighter. What part of the mountain skyline will host today’s sunrise today I wonder.

I wait. And watch. The boat sways, possibly someone awake on the lower deck but they’ve made no sound.

I can see that the clouds from yesterday’s storm are gone. The sky will be blue this morning, although still a pale grey at the moment.

A carp jumps a few boats down.

Steps can be heard on the dock.

A jet passes in the distance. The day is gaining steam.

A second and third raven join in the morning revelry.

A boat powers and leads a second out of the wind break. The fishermen are beginning their hunts.

The bangs and clanks of life begin to echo across the waters. The day is beginning throughout the marina. Others have come aware of the new day but how many are aware that this day started hours ago for me?

They may share it but this day is mine to savor from its beginning.

The sun breaks, noticeably a little further north than last time I watched it.

Good morning day. I’m so happy to have you join me.

So Far, So Fast

Hey Kids,

The lake calleth anew.

The weekend has come that we are about to head down to Lake Powell and get our boat training. At one point, this day seemed so far away and despite our numerous trips, I thought it would never come.

And now, the night before we leave, what have I packed? Nearly nothing.

By tomorrow morning, I’ll be rushing around trying to get ready, pushing the clock, and panicking that I’ll forget something.

But I’ll never wish I had more time to get ready.

Computer CTRL

Hey Kids,

Remember when you found out that CTRL+X was the “cut” command? CTRL-C copied it instead? Or that CTRL+V pasted those things back onto wherever you needed it?

Or the little window button returned you to the windows menu? It was like being told of a secret code, let in on a little known fact.

Function+F is an invaluable find function on any page or document. How did I ever not know that, and how did I ever function?Idiot-computer-warning-funny

I find it incredible that so many hidden commands hide within the keyboard of the computer. How many functions hide within the program commands in some of the programs I use every day?

Just exactly how dumb am I?
