Perfect Days

Hey kids,

A motorcycle has no top, no doors, and no inside.

The air, as it it on the outside, is as it is on you.

Wind chill, moisture, and heat are all experienced first hand by the rider.

It’s part of the experience. ac0239f797e7fb746c2fa7856ec26968

Let me tell you, some of that “experience” is not as fun, even on those perfect sunny days. In fact, many of those perfect aren’t so perfect. Wind burn, sun burn, and bum burn can also be part of the perfect day “experience”.

I take it all, but the way to make those not-so-perfect characteristics livable is to be prepared for them.

Rain gear, sun screen, and layered clothing can be the difference between enjoyed and endured.

The more you ride, the more you learn what to carry in the saddle bags and how to use them.

Life, in general, is like this too.

Star Wars Day on the Dark Side

Hey kids,

I always miss this one, or at least remember way to late to use it.

So here it goes:

May the Fourth be with you.

I’m going to have so much fun today.

Speaking of Star Wars, I still think Darth Maul was too good of a character to waste on one episode. The double bladed sword, the martial arts, the tattooed face; he was the villain to fear.

Dart Maul carried, or at least did not share, his tortured past. He loved being a Sith; I never sensed any conflict in him. He went right to work with the Jedi, issuing no one liners, no insults, and no taunting. He did not fear the Jedi- not even two of them. He had style, he had hate, and he had skills; skills even I could appreciate.

I really don’t want to know anymore of Darth Maul’s background. I hope he doesn’t come back around as some half robot, half soul searching Sith wannabe. He was the one that made Episode 1 work for me.

Darth Maul- the villain we never knew so we could like/hate him the way bad guys need to be.

Traveling Past

Hey Kids,

If you could travel back in time, where would you go?

A recent movie allowed a few simple constraints.abouttime

You can only go back in time, within your own lifetime and to a time that you can remember.

Where would you go?

Me?

Anytime I could see my kids again but especially the day we all hiked to Twin lakes.

Or any of the Christmas Eves.

Or one of those days fishing at Mirror Lake.

It’s a theoretical question. Impossible.

And yet, I visited each and every one of those moments just now.

Thank You from the Future

Hey Kids,

“Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”

I’ve heard this before. This particular quote is from Gary Vaynerchuk. I dig that guy. If you’re an entrepreneur in any degree, I recommend getting to know Gary Vee.hustle

Anyway, I had heard him say this quote before and thought it good then but it didn’t hit home as deep as I thought. I never acted on it. At least not specifically.

I heard it again yesterday.

I kept hearing it in my head throughout the day.

I had started work early, so I decided to leave early.

I headed home and fired up the laptop and got some work done for me.

Today, a new tone has been set. It felt good to have started a project and now I need only to continue. I got up early this morning and worked some more. Good stuff, productive stuff. Winning stuff.

My future self is so pleased with yesterday’s self.

It all worked as promised.

Try it.

The Slide vs. the Ride

Hey Kids,

Dress for the slid, not the ride.

So says a popular motorcyclist saying. It means to anticipate the worst thing possible in lieu of only enjoying the immediate best part.watermelon-helmet-1

Many riders go without helmets and protective gear. They feel the wind in the hair, the sun on the skin, and the freedom of clothing expression are the reasons they ride.

Icon Safety GearOthers wear skid armor jackets, thick leather gloves and full faced helmets. The equipment might steal the rider of the intimacy of the road, but gives comfort from feeling safe if things go horizontal.

In this scenario, the saying puts all merit in being prepared for what could happen and makes second the comfort and the joy of the road.

On a motorcycle, this might be good advice.

In life, I suggest the opposite.

Getting Old

Hey Kids,

I know kids can be kids and they are not adults.

as it should be

Correct Child Containment when in Public

But in public places, I think the adults who own the kids should be adults.

The lessons of inside voice, being aware of others, and general courtesy are best taught when young.

Stopping for dinner tonight, there are a few kids who have missed these lessons, nor does it appear to be the process of being taught.

Mom, her sister, and their grandma are really good at saying stop on occasion and in a voice a little louder, more shrill, and surprisingly more annoying than the kids.

Two Worlds Colliding

Hey Kids,

Not everything has to be one way or the other.

Not everything has to elicit a soul search followed by a decision.

Are you Red or Blue?

Sour or sweet?

Cat or dog?

Paper or plastic?

But I have bridged the great divide. The one believed to never be able to be linked.

I have done it.

I like Star Wars and Star Trek

Disney Magic

Hey Kids,

As I sit here in the tire center of the Super Store, enjoying my lunch amongst the stacks of tires and their promises of extended life and superior traction, a song plays.

It’s a popular song from a long ago Disney movie.disney

It conjures memories so strong that I can nearly taste them.

I remember watching the movie with little ones hanging on me.

The memory intensifies with the telling of it.

It pleases and it hurts.

It’s worth it tonight.

It’s always worth it.

I miss you but as the song playing states, you’ll be in my heart forever.

And always.
