Megamouth Shark- What is it good for?

Hey Kids,

I read a report today about a shark, a Megamouth Shark, that was found caught in a fisherman’smegamouth21e net. It constitutes only the 60th time this species has ever been seen. Where it goes, how it lives is near a complete mystery. It’s only known that it exists because its there in the net. On occasion anyway.

From time to time, other fish are caught in nets that others had thought were extinct by millions of years ago. Some of these species are figured out, others remain mysteries.

There’s a whole lot of things in this world we don’t know yet. A lot.

It doesn’t mean that speculation can’t help us find out answers, if fact, it is the key to finding the answers. But only if you are willing to challenge the speculations and accept when a speculation appears to be proven wrong.

Likewise in our decisions and understandings of life. Too many times the world “waffling” is thrown around when someone changes their mind about something. It’s certain death to a politician. Why we cannot allow a person to evolve in their own thoughts is disappointing.

In this age of strict separation of political thought, of aggressive attacks of people with opposing viewpoints, and of deep seated opinions. I urge you not to participate in the confirmed failed tactics of trench warfare.

Weigh, measure, and evaluate your own opinion. Repeat as often as you’d like, the more times the better. It’s ok to be wrong. It’s ok to make it right. It’s ok to think different. But be honest with yourself.

Like the Megamouth Shark is.

Surrounding History

broadwayHey kids,

Last Sunday we went to the movies, one that I had not been to in some time, Broadway Cinema, downtown Salt Lake City. State Street and Broadway to be more precise. It’s a unique theatre, so much different from the ones built nowadays. Tucked away between buildings, it’s barely noticeable and within the company I escorted, only I knew of it. For me, it holds some nostalgia and some history.

It is where I watched the Return of the Jedi on its original opening run in the early 80’s. I’m not sure what winds your clock, but that’s some history in my neighborhood.

But the site played host to at least one more nugget of historical events that shrouds them all. At least in my book. State Street and Broadway, a time ago, represented the address of the Colorado Stables. Owned by Mr. Porter Rockwell. It is in these stables that Rockwell met the end of his trail, dying on a cot in the back office.IMG_20150304_213936_017-1

I wonder as I look at the surrounds, how many people know that? How many people who would care to know that, know it?

I wonder how many historical ghosts I pass daily unaware.

Is it important to remember the past? I vote yes.

Day 9

Making Good Time

Ano-novoMaking good time has always been an obsession with me and my family. It’s an odd expression and goal. It really doesn’t make any sense, yet I still find myself trying to accomplish it with every drive.

Making good time of course is to arrive sooner than expected. However, if one did the math, one would also know exactly when one was expected. The magic is to always arrive sooner anyway. And the trick is to simply lower expectations and then speed.

I almost always still equate travel time to 60MPH. The accepted safe speed from back in the 55 MPH days, may they burn in hell. Anyone who thinks 55 MPH was a good speed limit, go drive from Salt Lake to Reno, as I have done so many times. And then drive back again. With a carload of kids. In the summer time. In the 1970’s.

Anyway, I figure a mile a minute. From there, I make good time or I make bad time. Regardless of the 75 MPH zones now. With gas stops and potty breaks, a good time can still be maintained if the trip is long enough. If my trip is less than 1 minute/mile. I am a happy man. I it exceeds it, I will do better the next time, no matter what it takes.

Does it matter? To me, it’s all that matters when on the road.

Life’s Too Short for Negative Reviews

header-bad-reviewsIt’s too short to do surveys too, but that’s another subject.
But I don’t like giving bad reviews, as in reviews on bad books, speeches, etc. I don’t do it. It doesn’t make me feel good doing it. And it can destroy the recipient.
I might give a friend feedback, and I’ll be honest too. But at least then, that person asked and knows that I’m trying to help and not tear down.
But an unsolicited, negative review, I’ll pass. I don’t need it, they don’t need it. I’ll just move along to the next book, presentation, speech. Whatever.
If I like it, on the flip side, unsolicited good reviews is what life is all about!
I love to tell an author how much I loved his or her book. It’s encouraging. For both of us. I feel good doing it. I know the recipient enjoys it too.
And we can all use more time feeling good.

What’s the Point?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhat’s the point?

To climb a mountain. Why?

To exercise? What for?

To work hard? For what?

To deal with life? To what end?

When it comes down to it, there really is no answer that works for everyone. And there’s really no reason at all to push yourself. In fact, life would that you don’t. Don’t believe me?

Tell someone you’re on a diet. See how long before you’re told that it won’t work, or you’re not doing it right; not giving up enough stuff, eating the wrong things.

Start a new exercise program. You won’t be doing it long enough, at the wrong time of the day, or you’ll hear some story about someone who, despite being fit, died at a young age.

Set a goal. It’ll be too high, or too low.

Write something. You spelled it wrong or you’ll be told how they should do it too, you know since writing is so easy- a monkey can do it.

You see, no one wants to see you do something out of the ordinary or accomplish something.

I don’t think it’s always mean, but it’s discouraging. And ultimately, the naysayers are right.

There’s always a better way to diet and exercise. There’s always a taller mountain. There’s always someone who worked less and got more. There’s always a better way, someone more accomplished, or a threat of failure and total humiliation.

So what’s the point?

What is it? You know what makes you feel good. You know whether a challenge is rewarding to struggle for. You’re the one that has to tough it out; do the work. You’re the one that has to live with the results.

Don’t let perfection stop you. Go for it. For you. For your reasons. Climb your mountains, set your goals, do what you want to do and do it because you want to. Just be prepared to be asked, “Why? What’s the point?”

You don’t owe anyone an answer, but if you don’t know, ain’t no one going to be able to explain it to you.

My Gift

I don’t have much. But I do, through Amazon, have the ability to make my Kindle book “Twice the Christmas” available for free through the Christmas days ahead. It’s my gift to anyone who would like it. You don’t need a kindle to read it, just the desire to accept a gift.

If you enjoy it (or don’t) I would greatly appreciate a review of whether you think. Or don’t. There’s no strings attached. I will not receive any royalties, emails, names, etc.

I don’t have much, but I can still wish a Merry Christmas to anyone who would like to hear it.

Merry Christmas!

Back from my Toils

This might start out like sounding like complaining but please keep I mind that it is not. I am doing what I love and have enjoyed most, if not all (no, most) of my time doing it.

I have been preoccupied with readying the books Twice the Christmas and Ain’t Dead Yet for print. I learned a lot of formatting, font setting , and even a little cover art techniques in the process. I’m very proud of the finish products, as they become available. Twice the Christmas is now ready, I am proofing Ain’t Dead Yet now but it’ll be out soon as well.

I’m doing what I truly enjoy. I had envisioned writing, had done some writing int he pas, a lot really. But as I immerse myself deeper into the workings of bookmaking, I feel like I fall deeper into that groove of life that I sought.

They say if you never want to work another day in your life, do something that you love. I have my day job, and I have writing. One goes by slowly, the other I never seem to have enough time to do as much as I want. Want to guess which one is which?

Find your passion. Then do it.

I did and I’m loving it!
