In and Out

Hey kids!

I enjoy a good burger from time to time. Probably a little more than I should.

I realize that not all burgers are created equal and therefore should not be judged as equal either.

Tonight we stopped at In and Out.

On quality it ranks over McDonald’s standard fare but well below restaurant level.

It’s fun food. The servers, although cheesy, make you smile from the start.  The menu is simple and all contained on the two small lighted panels above the cashier. The red and white color scheme makes the dining room bright and appear cleaner than it most likely is.

A glance around produces many smiling customers. It’sobvious that the happy atmosphere radiating from the kitchen is contagious.

In and Out will never win a Best Burger award without an inordinate number of qualifiers, but it’s fun and the food satisfies the hunger.

Storm Signs

Hey Kids,

It’s easy to know when a big storm is coming to the Salt Lake Valley area.

The temperature warms and the wind blows from the south. Not a little breeze but a day of forceful, gusty, powerful wind.260

It’s not hard to put it together.

And yet there are many who do not.

Many will wake up surprised that the temperatures have turned cold.

Life like approaching storms, brings with them signs.

Watch for them.

Day 330

Out There

IMG_20160109_160434_783

Hey kids,

I’ve written before about Utah’s west desert but I’m going to do it again.

For the first time we ventured out into a snow covered landscape. The recent storms had left nearly a foot of snow on the ground.

The tracks in the road marked those that had passed before us;,it really hadn’t been that many. Tracks in the snow marked where the many critters had passed as well. Cow, wild mustangs, jack rabbits, and small rodentish tracks criss crossed the road. We ended up seeing at least one of each, minis the rodent but plus one coyote.

We took a trail unknown to us and even less traveled. We had no idea where it led and the sun sunk lower with each mile.

Eventually we found our way back to a paved road and then one with a highway number. We had covered about 100 miles on unknown dirt, snowpacked roads.

It still sets me in awe how much open land there exists, how much life lives in those harsh environments, and how few people explore any of it.

I love going out there.

Day #320

Dad’s Dilemma

Hey Kids,

No answer.

That’s what I get when I ask anything about you.

Closed doors. No response through any communication attempts.saddad

I hope one day you’ll understand why I couldn’t just continue to leave gifts at the door.

I hope one day you’ll understand that I wanted to give you the world, but in exchange I wanted to be your dad.

Happy Birthday. May you never realize what you lost today.

Day 316

2015

Hey Kids,

I’ve heard a number of people say that they hope next year will be better than this year, implying that this year has been bad.

I’m not sure I agree.

I mean, I do hope next year is better. Why wouldn’t I? But thinking back to this past year, it wasn’t too bad.

Sure some bad things happened, like my recent hearing loss; but so did some good things, like we got married and took our first family vacation to Texas.

Getting married in the Chapel of Pines

When I reflect on the past year, I’m satisfied. It wasn’t the best year ever, no. But I’m pleased and satisfied with 2015

2016. Let’s see what you’ve got.

Day 311

I Have a Friend That’s a Droid

Hey Kids,

The world premiere of star wars is Friday.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m more than just interested in the new installment of the series. I hope it really is good.CVaPd49UAAA-Fkn

This past week, however, I’ve noticed more commercials using a Star Wars theme. It may have been going on longer. I just had  down time on the couch not feeling well and caught more TV time than usual. Anyway, it’s not just Star Wars either. Other major brands use the scenes and theme of other big movies and liken their products or their company goals to that of the movie. For example, a car company talks of how the heroine of the Mocking Jay series was one to whom they could relate.

What?

But regardless of whether they believe what they say or not, or that they have some connection or want some connection with popular movies; does it make you feel better about the product.

It does nothing for me, and in fact comes off as a negative. Wishing almost. “I wish we could be as popular as this movie; so if we have it featured in our commercial, maybe you’ll think we are as cool as Star Wars” A movie no one has seen yet.

Am I thinking about this too much?

Day 295

December Christmas

Hey Kids,

It seems to me that Christmas is starting a little bit early.

I know that the stores want to start earlier and earlier. But it’s usually followed by the public outcry of “Too Early!”

Black Friday wasn’t until the day after Thanksgiving, and now many places run Black Friday specials all month long.tumblr_inline_mvjd3e9kyO1rdzepz

This year, however, everyone appears to have caved. Christmas music is playing. People are shopping, and I swear Thanksgiving could pass and no one would notice.

I like Christmas. I really do. I even love the fact that the entire month of December is all Christmas. But only the month of December.

I’m not upset about it; it’s not worth it. And if any Holiday is going to be expanded, Christmas is a good one.

But other than this post, my Christmas season begins only and once the turkey is eaten
