A Few Hours in a Row

Hey kids,

I might be getting a little punchy, but it has been 25 hours since I woke from my 2 1/2 hour nap yesterday. To be 100% honest, I did catch a 35 minute nap during my lunch hour between 2 and 3 AM this morning. Suffice to say, I’m running on empty right now.

Some ask me why I do it.

Some advise to stop working so much.

Others even suggest I can’t hold out.61776203

The why is the reason the other two suggestions are irrelevant.

I do this two jobs because I can, because it’s needed, and because there isn’t anybody else that could or should do it for me.

It’s called standing on your own, personal responsibility, or adulting.

Despite the tired moments, it feels good.

Blue Tea

Hey kids,

I needed to grab some food on the way home from job #1 to sleep for an hour or two before job #2. And on the way, there’s a Subway shop tucked up under a grocery store and part of a little Salt Lake underground strip mall.IMG_20160706_173808

I ordered my sandwich, Chicken Bacon Ranch, splurged for the meal deal, and slid my card for bonus Subway points. All the time eyeing the tea dispenser, full, I imagined, of refreshing ice tea. Of the peach variety my hopes dared to dream. I declined my receipt, picked out my chips, and activated the ice dispenser

I pulled the lever on the tea canister, and nothing. I pull it three more times just to be sure I was doing it right. Still no tea flow.

I turned and asked the watching late teen/early twenties sandwich artist, “what gives?”

“It’s broke.”

His technical response cut deep and defied any follow-up questions.

“So my choice is soda?”

I looked with disdain at the eight dispensers now mocking my cup of ice.

“I can let you have a bottle of Powerade instead,” he offered. He pointed to the small glass-door refrigerator on the counter behind him, filled with more soda, bottled water, and blue liquid electrolytes.

I accepted the offer.

“No charge.” He smiled

No charge? I divined from the look on his face he felt quite proud of his generosity and customer service skills. He wasn’t offering a discount on my now spoiled meal, but making it known he would not charge me for my “extra” bottle of of blue sports Kool-aid.

Out of reflex courtesy, I thanked him.

Despite the beverage blunder on my part, the artist did well on the sandwich he created and I pulled away on my iron horse a happy cowboy.

Blue does not a tea make, but not everything has to be perfect all the time.

Today

Hey kids,

The world is changing. Always has and always will. What was yesterday is not today and won’t be tomorrow.

I find it’s better to anticipate the brightness of the future than to pine for the good times of the past for the past will never return.

But the future is not here yet.

The present is now. Live the present, it’s better than both the future and the past.

The Last day of the 50th Year

Hey kids,

Tomorrow, I’m fifty.

At forty, I mentioned that I was then half dead. At fifty, I don’t feel like that so much;  instead, I feel like I’m at the beginning of the best decade ever.

I feel healthier, even if I might not be. I feel happier, even though I carry a huge sadness. I feel like I have ever bit as much energy since I was in my 20’s or 30’s. Yes, 50 is going to be good to me I think.title-50

If for no other reason than I am going to make my 50’s good to me.

Punch the ticket, the ride is about to start.

Dragons or Princesses

Hey Kids,

I watch YouTube videos on a regular basis because they inspire me. I’m not much of a social butterfly, so these people are my friend replacements. On occasion, they are life altering, thought provoking, and/or sources for sage life advice.

Today I came across this little nugget:YouTube-logo-play-icon

All the dragons in our lives are perhaps princesses expecting us to be handsome and brave; all the terrifying things are perhaps nothing but helpless things waiting for us to help them.

YouTube. Who would’ve thunk it?

Life After Death

Hey kids,

Last night I reported on the death of my laptop. It may have been slightly exaggerated.

The screen is broke and the touch screen is still wacked out but life clung to the micro circuits.

My back up computer proved to be too slow to become updated, so I fought with the erratic screen to little avail. But then an old joke flashed through my stained brain.

“Doctor, my arm hurts when I move it like this.”

“Then don’t move it like that.”compangel

<<Rim shot>>

Everything appeared to work, except the touch screen.

So I disabled the touch screen.

Tada!

Fully functional traditional laptop. Old school.

And then to top it all off, I check the receipt to see how long I’ve had this machine. The date said January 2015, but more importantly I noticed the line item labeled Extended Warranty on the invoice.

What??!

I forgot, I paid for the second year of warranty which covers accidents. I might be covered after all.

Dead is not always fatal.

Perfect Days

Hey kids,

A motorcycle has no top, no doors, and no inside.

The air, as it it on the outside, is as it is on you.

Wind chill, moisture, and heat are all experienced first hand by the rider.

It’s part of the experience. ac0239f797e7fb746c2fa7856ec26968

Let me tell you, some of that “experience” is not as fun, even on those perfect sunny days. In fact, many of those perfect aren’t so perfect. Wind burn, sun burn, and bum burn can also be part of the perfect day “experience”.

I take it all, but the way to make those not-so-perfect characteristics livable is to be prepared for them.

Rain gear, sun screen, and layered clothing can be the difference between enjoyed and endured.

The more you ride, the more you learn what to carry in the saddle bags and how to use them.

Life, in general, is like this too.

Thank You from the Future

Hey Kids,

“Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”

I’ve heard this before. This particular quote is from Gary Vaynerchuk. I dig that guy. If you’re an entrepreneur in any degree, I recommend getting to know Gary Vee.hustle

Anyway, I had heard him say this quote before and thought it good then but it didn’t hit home as deep as I thought. I never acted on it. At least not specifically.

I heard it again yesterday.

I kept hearing it in my head throughout the day.

I had started work early, so I decided to leave early.

I headed home and fired up the laptop and got some work done for me.

Today, a new tone has been set. It felt good to have started a project and now I need only to continue. I got up early this morning and worked some more. Good stuff, productive stuff. Winning stuff.

My future self is so pleased with yesterday’s self.

It all worked as promised.

Try it.
