Make it a Home Run Derby

Hey Kids,

One-at -bat, as my online mentor Gary Vaynerchuk would say.

You get one shot at this life. Within the one-at-bat you’re granted,
you’ll have moments of strikes but ultimately one result. A result you’ll never realize until it over.

Except in this scenario there is no 3 strike limit.

Reggie Jackson- Mr. Oakland

No limit to hits, no other inning but the ninth, and always playing for the win.

I’ve had some worries lately and I’ve been letting it get me down. But my dear Annette
also reminded me how stupid that approach is. She lives for today with an eye to the future. She never passes a good laugh, time spent with those she loves, and a good long bath with bath salts.

She reminds me of what’s good in this world, what’s important, and what’s not.

Success and happiness are always waiting at the next pitch.

I think it’s time to let it rip and swing for the fences.

Will the Future Pay?

Hey Kids,

Interesting thought:

What will you do when what you do for a living no longer pays or no longer exists?

Do you have a plan?garyvee

I think that is the challenge of the future.

I heard this thought from Jewel, a well-established singer who doesn’t think people will pay for music in the future. She’s preparing herself for that reality so she can continue to create music and make a living doing it.

I’m a writer. Will people always pay for books, for literature? I don’t know. But if I want to write in the future, I better figure it out.

The future holds no guarantees for anyone; no matter who’s the president.

Thank You from the Future

Hey Kids,

“Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”

I’ve heard this before. This particular quote is from Gary Vaynerchuk. I dig that guy. If you’re an entrepreneur in any degree, I recommend getting to know Gary Vee.hustle

Anyway, I had heard him say this quote before and thought it good then but it didn’t hit home as deep as I thought. I never acted on it. At least not specifically.

I heard it again yesterday.

I kept hearing it in my head throughout the day.

I had started work early, so I decided to leave early.

I headed home and fired up the laptop and got some work done for me.

Today, a new tone has been set. It felt good to have started a project and now I need only to continue. I got up early this morning and worked some more. Good stuff, productive stuff. Winning stuff.

My future self is so pleased with yesterday’s self.

It all worked as promised.

Try it.

Speed Kills

Speed Kills

#21 Cliff Branch

Hey Kids,

Speed Kills.

So stated a banner that I remember hanging in the Oakland Coliseum as I watch football games with my dad back in the 70’s and early 80’s. I knew what it meant. Everyone knew what it meant. Number 21, Cliff Branch, was on the field and if you blinked, he’d be catching the ball behind you.

Cliff Branch was quieter than many of the other players on the team. But at any time, he could be heard. With lighting speed, he could go from in front of the defense to the back of the end zone. Let your guard down for a second and he’d be gone, with the ball, scoring 6 on you. He was always that deep threat; on any down, at any point of the game, and at any yard marker.

Speed Kills. That slogan and banner will forever be stuck in my mind. Possibly the plague of every Raider fan.

Today I listened to a presentation given to studying entrepreneurs. At the end of the talk, the professor of the class asked the people in the room to repeat the one biggest thing they took from their guest speaker, Gary Vaynerchuk (Jets fan). Before anyone said a word, the words “Speed Kills” echoed in my head.

One of “Gary V’s” points during his chat with these student included that moving forward, moving quickly, is what gives him the advantage. Businesses become slow as they grow, they become careful, cautious, and methodical. Exploit it and be the sleek, speedy predator that you can be (my words). That concept resonated with me. I alone control my pace. I’m in charge of my rate of work. It can be my advantage, should I decide to take advantage of it.

I understand that speed is not everything by itself; you do have to catch the ball. Likewise skill and quality also count. But anyone can attain those attributes if they’re slow and careful enough.

But Speed Kills.

It is time to pick it up.
