Good Chocolate

Hey Kids,

I saw a posted meme today that I reposted.hershey

Then I thought it might be a good idea to check it out.

The story revolves around the money donated from Milton Hershey from his share of the profits of Hershey’s chocolate to his own school of orphans.

There are many that think the direction of this now extremely well-funded school should change, expand, or even divert the mission of the school to more appropriate, better informed entities.

I’m not really in a place to make a compelling argument of what is right or what is wrong. I feel that no one has the right to alter the wishes of a donor. I guess that’s why we have courts.

The impressive part of this story for me is Mr. Hershey’s true desire.

When I read the meme, the first thing I thought is that I should buy more Hershey’s chocolate when given a choice. Which happens to be the exact opposite of what he wanted. In fact, he wanted no one to know of his donations because he didn’t want anyone to think he was doing it for that exact thought. He did it because it was something he could do, and make a big difference for those for whom he felt the desire to help. That simple.

I’ll honor those wishes. I won’t go out of my way to buy Hershey’s chocolate bars; there are many I enjoy more. But on those occasions that I do, I’ll remember what this man did for those who needed and need it. And he did it without fanfare and without regards to how it could be used to profit him beyond his own satisfaction.

I think the next Hershey’s chocolate I consume might taste just a little bit sweeter.

There’s some good people out there.

Day 285

Bad or Badder

Hey Kids,

I had the ear test and the results were not the best.

It has been determined that one of two things have caused my hearing loss: A virus or a tumor.ent-pod-cast

To solve the virus problem, I have been placed on a treatment of steroids for two weeks, after which I will have a second ear test and see if any improvement has been made. If there is improvement, we’ll outline future treatment. The doctor did not give any odds but let me know that if no improvement is seen, we’ll be taking about hearing loss management. The thing in my favor is that we started treatment so early.

In two weeks, An MRI will be taken to search for any tumors. If it turns out to be the actual cause, I do not know the treatment. It is safe to say, this is the least likely and the least desired outcome.

I know that the loss of hearing in one ear is not the end of the world, there are plenty of people who have worse. I’m just shocked at how sudden it has occurred. And it amazes me how something so small has made such a big change in my life.

Even if just temporarily. I hope.

Day 284

Hear No More

Hey Kids,

I don’t want to make more of this than there is, but I lost my ability to hear in my left ear.

It was a sudden development, but the bottom line is that I can’t hear anything in 50% of my hearing apps.lisa_bird_flt-lrg.en

I’ll go tomorrow and get more answers and prognosis. I hope to know tomorrow whether this is temporary or permanent. I would be lying if I said I was unconcerned or not worried. I’ll confess, I’m a little rattled at the thought of losing my hearing, even if only by 50%.

What really gets me thinking is a common thought. Life is so uncertain and so short. One never knows what tomorrow will bring so don’t worry about it.

Be thankful today. Be active today. Be alive today.

Day 283

Cold Hands, Warm Heart

Hey Kids,

I don’t mind riding in colder weather.

Many riders with which I speak during the summer time say their rule is 50°. Under fifty, no ride.

I’ve also heard of this expanded into the 50/50 rule. Riding stops if it’s 50°or less and/or a 50% chance of rain.

As always, I say to each their own. But as for me and my house, we shall ride in whatever weather God gives us. (Snow and Ice excepted.)

I get asked, “How do you stay warm?”

My response is “I don’t.”

There’s an inherent coldness to riding a motorcycle. At least in these parts. There are the two or three months where it’s actually hot during the day. But even in July, in the mountains, the evenings can drop into the 60’s or 70’s and on a bike, it can feel cold.

But it’s ok to be cold. It does a body good, reminds one of the fragile nature of life. There does exist heated gear, but I would guess that even still, there will always be one part of your body not heated and cold.

My weak spot is the hands. I have come to accept that once the temperature drops into the 30’s, my fingers will freeze before getting to work. The colder it gets, the less time it takes to freeze. I can tell you, the freeze time can get down to as little as two minutes. I read about and investigated different gloves. Every brand had some people swore by them and yet others cursed them.

I figured that it came down to wind elimination. At 8°, the coldest I have ventured out, and the reported humidity of that morning, I calculated the wind chill at the spot where I run at 55mph to be -40F. I’m not sure if I calculated correctly, but suffice to say, it was c-c-c-o-l-d-d-d.511sqwpau+L._SX425_

Yesterday I received my latest option. Handle bar mitts. For $20, I’d give it a shot.

The morning temperature this morning was 22°. Challenge accepted.

I strapped on the mitts.

Adjusted them a little bit. Figured out whether I could work the clutch and brake within the mitts. Accidently strapped the mitt across the horn button for nice5-10 second blast at 5:30 am, (sorry fellow apartment dwellers) and took off into the dark cold air.

With the realization that I could not switch the high beams (deer detectors) on and off and work the turn signals, I continued on anyway.

When I arrived at my destination 25 minutes later, my hands were a little cold on the fingers but not frozen. It had been comfortable and easy to slip my hand in and out to adjust head gear and hand signal my turns. The clutch and front brake levers were easily accessible. In fact the only reason my fingers were cold is because of the times I had to hold down the ice-cold metal levers.

If I add heated grips (the Suzuki has them, the Yamaha which I rode today does not), I think my hands would have been actually warm.

Next attempt will be to insulate the levers first.

I will report later as the temperatures plummet over the next two months.

Day 281

50,000 or Bust

Hey Kids,

50,000 new words written.

I finished my NaNoWriMo challenge.NaNo-2015-Winner-Banner

This was a challenging one with so much going on, and then starting a new second job on top of that!

Maybe to some, the deed doesn’t seem to great.

To me, it’s something many people start out saying they’re going to do it, and then a only a small percentage actually realize it.

Day 280

Working for the Weekend

Hey Kids,

Just a quick note before I take off tonight and work my Australian Hours Job. (Sounds better than graveyard). (Or does it?)

We had the kids over for a round of Chicken Soup. It was our Thanksgiving Dinner with them. We figured that everyone has had enough Turkey at this point. It’s always good food for the soul.IMG_20151129_212128_525

I didn’t quite finish my NaNoWriMo story today but I have until tomorrow night to finish. I’m within striking distance, a simple normal day’s quota will do it.

It’s been a long weekend with the days off and the working every day of it. But it has been a good one. The extra job has relived a lot of stress. Especially once the extra check starts cashing. It’s not as materialistic as that sounded. I’ll explain later.

Day 279

Failure is Not an Option

Hey Kids,

I knew the NaNoWriMo thing would be tough to do this month with so much going on, but I decided to jump into it anyway.tumblr_mvlcokDhGQ1qc0c3bo1_500

Everything was going great, until this past week when things got a little hairy at work, I began a new second job, and Thanksgiving made its appearance.

The plan was to work ahead, in preparation for this week in particular. I didn’t.

The plan was to finish early in the month and avoid this whole week entirely. It didn’t.

The plan was to make sure there was no way I could fail at achieving 50,000 words written before November 30th. This plan is still alive.

Goodbye_QuitterI hate to fail. Especially when everything is within my possibility. I am responsible for falling behind. I will be responsible to hit the mark.

Failure is not an option.

Day 278

Full Forward Reverse

Hey Kids,

I believe in dreams.

And I believe in pursuing said dreams. But there is a big fat reality with which we must all reckon, the need of money. For me that need has turned into a second job. I am in training now to be an overnight stocker at a large retailer.wallyworld1

It is the exact opposite direction that I had hoped for. But it is the answer for the moment.

I’ll still work at my writing. I have a book that’s in the works that I can’t quite get to a point that I want to let it out. It’s just not good enough. And my first book, although well liked by those who have read it, is not really selling enough to be a reliable source of income.

So instead of working towards financial independence and working for myself, I will trade some hours for money.

It’s ok. I’m not crying about it. Sometimes a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do. And currently, my hourly labor is worth more than my written words in a book. It’s cool. This world don’t owe me anything.

I don’t owe it anything either and I believe this all will change one day. I’m just going to keep plugging along.

Until then, I’ll take their money.
